Top Weekend Road Trips from Mumbai
Mumbai's location puts a surprising amount of variety within a single weekend's reach — hill stations, beaches, forts, and vineyards are all a few hours' drive away. Here are our favourite short escapes, and which kind of rental suits each one.
1. Lonavala & Khandala (about 2 hours)
The easiest weekend escape from Mumbai, with waterfalls in monsoon and cool weather most of the year. Good for a quick self-drive if you're comfortable on the expressway — a compact hatchback like the Swift is plenty.
2. Mahabaleshwar (about 5-6 hours)
Strawberry farms, viewpoints, and winding ghat roads. Because the drive is longer and includes hill sections, we'd suggest a chauffeur-driven SUV like the XUV700 so everyone can enjoy the views instead of watching the road.
3. Alibaug (about 3 hours via the coastal route, less by ferry)
Beaches, old forts, and a more relaxed pace than the hill stations. A comfortable sedan or an Ertiga works well if you're travelling as a family.
4. Kolad (about 3 hours)
Best known for white-water rafting on the Kundalika river. Roads are decent but can get busy on weekends — start early to beat the traffic out of the city.
Planning tip
- Book your car a few days ahead for weekend trips — availability tightens up fast on Friday and Saturday pickups.
- For ghat routes, a chauffeur-driven rental is usually more relaxing than self-drive, especially after dark.
- Carry a printed or downloaded copy of your ID and license — some toll and checkpost stops still ask for it.
