Monsoon Driving Tips for the Western Ghats

Routes like Mumbai–Lonavala, Mumbai–Mahabaleshwar and the Tamhini Ghat are beautiful in the monsoon, but the same rain that makes them green also makes them slippery, foggy, and prone to landslides. Here's how to stay safe.

Before you leave

• Check the weather and traffic advisories for your route that morning — some ghat sections close temporarily after heavy rain.
• Make sure wipers, headlights, and tyre tread are in good condition. If you're self-driving, ask us to check this at pickup.
• Fill your tank or charge fully before you start — fuel stations can be sparse on ghat roads.
• Tell someone your route and expected arrival time.

On the road

• Slow down on curves — wet roads roughly double your stopping distance.
• Keep headlights on, even during the day, in fog or heavy rain.
• Leave extra following distance from the vehicle ahead.
• If visibility drops sharply, pull over safely and wait it out rather than pushing through.
• Avoid driving through moving water on the road, even if it looks shallow — it hides potholes and washed-out edges.
