Documents You Need for Self-Drive Car Rental in India
Nothing derails a trip faster than showing up without the right paperwork. Here's the full checklist.
Required at pickup
- Valid driving license — must not be expired, and should be a license for the vehicle class you're renting (LMV for hatchbacks/sedans/SUVs).
- Government photo ID — Aadhaar card, passport, or voter ID.
- Address proof — usually covered by your Aadhaar, but keep a second document handy if your current address differs.
Good to have
- A second form of contact (alternate phone number) in case of any pickup coordination issues.
- A copy of your travel itinerary if you're taking the car outstation, in case you're asked at a checkpost.
Security deposit
Self-drive rentals require a refundable security deposit at pickup, released after the car is returned in the agreed condition. We'll confirm the exact amount when you book, based on the car you choose.
Tip for out-of-town renters
If your driving license was issued in a different state, that's completely fine — Indian driving licenses are valid nationwide. Just make sure it hasn't expired.
